About thirty minutes later, I pull up outside the address scribbled on my notebook.

It’s a three story apartment block on the edge of town. An old settee lies abandoned on the sidewalk, and the grass is strewn with litter. It’s a rough neighborhood, and I wonder how Jade ended up here.

I take the concrete stairs two at a time to the second floor. Her door is the third one along, and it’s surrounded either side by a line of potted plants overgrown with brightly colored flowers.

I knock on the door, just in case anyone’s in, but there’s silence. I brought a crowbar to break open the door, but before I do that, I run my fingers under the pots. It’s the last pot on the left, a small one with a cluster of red flowers, where I find the key.

I shake my head. In a neighborhood like this, she shouldn’t be leaving a spare key so easy to find. Although I’m thankful I don’t have to break down her door.

I turn the key and push open the door. “Hello?” I call. But I already know there won’t be a response.

Feeling like an intruder, I slip inside and shut the door behind me.

It’s a small apartment, the door leading straight into the kitchen. There’s a stillness about the place. The curtains are pulled, making it dim and hard to see. I pull them open, banishing the dimness and causing particles of dust to dance in the sunlight.

There’s an upturned coffee mug drying on the dish rack and a single plate.

I feel a tug of relief at the first clue that she lives alone.

I walk through to the living room and open the curtains here too. There’s a loveseat and a wide screen TV. It’s simple but tastefully decorated with red cushions and hints of color around the room.

There’s a shelf with knick knacks and photo frames on it. I stride over to it and pick up a photo. My heart sinks. It’s Jade smiling at the camera, and next to her is a man. His smile is thin and doesn’t quite reach his eyes.

A stab of jealousy hits me, and I clench my fists.

They’re at a beach on vacation somewhere. They’re side by side leaning their heads together, but aside from the top of their heads, they’re not touching.

It could be a brother or a friend, I tell myself. The pose doesn’t seem intimate enough to be a lover.

I put the photo down and pick up the next one.

This one is of two young girls. I immediately recognize Jade as a little girl with pigtails and a cheeky grin. The girl beside her looks similar and I guess it’s her sister.

The next picture is of the two girls again, this time older and with their arms around a woman who must be their mother.

I feel a deep curiosity to know more about her family, about her past, to know all about her.

There’s a connection between us, there’s no denying that. I can’t keep my hands off her, and when we kissed, it was electric.
